Australia is a stable, culturally diverse, democratic society, and the only nation to govern an entire continent. The country's multicultural society includes its Indigenous peoples and migrants from some 200 countries.

Australia and the United States maintain a strong relationship, characterised by cultural similarities and robust bilateral arrangements. This year the two countries mark a centenary of mateship — a friendship formed in the trenches of World War I during the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918. The Honourable Joe Hockey is Australia's Ambassador to the US, taking up his posting in Washington in January 2016.

The Australian Embassy in Washington DC is proud to host a wide variety of cultural events including films, concerts, lectures, exhibitions, and more. The Embassy's gallery is open from 10am until 2pm, Monday through Friday. Find more information at www.usa.embassy.gov.au/events and www.facebook.com/AusInTheUS/
