Yunus Emre Institute

The Yunus Emre Institute is a world-wide non-profit organization created to share and promote Turkish language, art and culture around the world. The Institue is named after the famous 14th-century poet Yunus Emre, whose work symbolizes love of humanity and social peace. On Thursday, December 20, from noon to 3 pm, the Institute presents Turkish Chef Yunus Emre Akkor. Chef Akkor will share the delicate and royal cuisines of the ancient Ottoman Empire with a delicious, five-course meal. Tickets are $80 and may be purchased here.


Deck the Halls: A Family at Christmas

This Saturday, December 1, enjoy an interactive open house at historic Tudor Place. Send cheer to a servicemember, join carolers in song, make a festive stocking ornament, and sample sweets made from receipes 100 years old. In the spirit of the Tudor Place's original owners, Thomas and Martha Peters, Tudor Place will be collecting Toys for Tots, and new men's crew socks that will be distributed to the homeless community. Celebrate holiday traditions at Tudor Place, and discover ways the Peter family contributed to relief efforts after World War I. The program is appropriate for families with children of all ages. Adults without children are invited to the evening Candlelight Tours and Holiday Tea. Make reservations today; tickets are available here.

Tabla and Taus Concert

On December 1 at 5:30 pm, hear two musicians perform at the Gandhi Memorial Center at Bethesda. Anirudh Alva Changkakoti is a tabla player whose love for the instrument was evident from childhood; he has won awards in both state and national level contests. Anirudh has recorded with Grammy-nominated artists and trained with maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain for the past nine years. Preetinder Singh Dhindsa started his Sikh music education at GAISS (Guru Angad Institute of Sikh Studies). He has studied with Sarangi player Ustad Surjeet Singh ji and Taus player Ustad Ranbir Singh ji. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Christmas Concert with the 
Ron Freeman Chorale

Visit the Franciscan Monastery Sunday, December 2, for the annual Christmas Concert featuring the Ron Freeman Chorale. Founded in 1971 by Ron Freeman, the group performs sacred choral music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The concert begins at 3:00 pm, followed by a reception and refreshments. The performance is open to the public.

DAR Christmas Open House

A Wednesday, December 5, annual holiday open house at DAR Museum has been canceled in observance of the National Day of Mourning in honor of the passing of the 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush. All executive offices and agencies of the federal government will be closed. Despite the cancellation of the DAR Christmas Open House special event, all are encouraged to visit the DAR Headquarters during normal business hours throughout the month to enjoy the building and Period Rooms decorated for the holidays.
