Every child walks away with a book. With the outcries of millions calling for improved conditions of black lives getting louder and louder and with the District's literacy and dropout rates bringing up the rear in national averages and the country playing the same role on an international scale, it seems most fitting that in the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is being honored with an international black book and cultural arts festival June 19-20, 2015. This is the first happening of the annual event. With ringing endorsements from the likes of Dr. Cornel West and others, it looks like the event is set to make good on its primary objective: for every child to be handed a book of their very own.
