In the late 1990s, representatives from DC Public Schools (DCPS), arts organizations, and charitable enterprises recognized a void and embraced a common goal: They wanted Washington's rich cultural resources to be accessible to all of the District's teachers and students, especially those in low-income neighborhoods. A related desire was to connect arts activities to the school curriculum. Existing programs were neither citywide, nor classroom oriented.

In 1998, these like-minded individuals founded a grass-roots community-based organization, the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, Inc. (DC Collaborative). Working with the DC public and charter schools, the DC Collaborative works to promote quality arts and humanities education for all DC public and chartered public schools for the growth of the whole child. In addition, we bolster the arts education community by providing a forum for sharing best practices, implementing standards, and focusing collective efforts on the needs of DC's teachers and students.

Since 1998, more than 205,300 District students have participated in the Arts for Every Student program, and more than 1,000 teacher have taken Professional Development workshops. In 2004, DCPS administration asked us to develop a comprehensive Arts Education Plan for the District school system. The Ford Foundation and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, our project partners, provided major gifts to make this effort possible.
