Shaw Open House celebrates the community and invites everyone to learn about the neighborhood's unique bars, restaurants and places to live, work, shop, and play. At every business visited, attendees can have a digital passport validated, allowing the bearer to enter prize drawings. This year's Shaw Open House focuses on the northern half of the Shaw Main Streets service area, north of Rhode Island Avenue and between 6th and 11th Streets, NW. The event is free and no tickets or reservations are required. |  Professional Fighters League Playoffs Events DC, the convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, and the Professional Fighters League (PFL) will host the playoff semi-final matches at the new Entertainment and Sports Arena in Congress Heights this Saturday, October 20. This ticketed event will feature welterweight and middleweight fight as competitors pursue becoming PFL World Champions. Fighters slated to compete in DC include top-seeds Abus Magomedov and Ray Cooper III as well as future Hall of Famer Jake Shields and veteran slugger Rick Story. For tickets, click here. |  Arab Music Now: Huda Asfour, 'ud and Qanun On Sunday, October 21, at the Freer|Sackler, hear musician and composer Huda Asfour, a vibrant interpreter of Arab music. Born in Lebanon, Huda combines melodies from the Middle East and North Africa with influences of classical music and jazz. Huda Asfour has collaborated with artists from Tunisia, Gaza, Ramallah, Egypt, Lebanon, and the United States. Huda studied ‘ud (Arab lute) at the National Conservatory of Music in Gaza and the Edward Said Conservatory in Ramallah. She also trained with qanun (zither) virtuoso Said Rajab in Cairo. Free music performances are at 12 pm and at 1 pm. | Malala Fund Photo Exhibition at Meridian International Center Photographer Nick Garcia shares the story of activist Malala Yousafzai's 2017 visit to Nigeria through a series of photos on display in Meridian International Center's historic White-Meyer House. The project showcases the Malala Fund's support of local activists working to break down barriers to girls' education. Included are scenes from the birthplace of the Boko Haram and a village where girls are learning to advocate for their education. The exhibit is accompanied by a film about the Malala Fund and projects in Nigeria.
