Come visit the Greater U Street Neighborhood Visitor Center! It is conveniently located next door to Ben’s Chili Bowl, 1211 U Street NW, across from the U Street metro, and is the perfect spot for both visitors and residents to start exploring the Greater U Street area as well as the rest of the city.
The visitor center serves as a front door to the U Street area, a historic African American neighborhood in Washington, DC. The center features maps, shopping and dining information, and other helpful information about the neighborhood. On the walls are historic photographs, quotations, and a timeline that highlights the major developments in the neighborhood and in the city.
To learn more about life on U Street and how it got to be what it is today, walk the City Within a City: Greater U Street Heritage Trail and download the accompanying audio tour.
The three minute Cultural Tourism DC Greater U Street DVD is now for sale at Ben’s Chili Bowl’s gift shop for $5 each. Learn more about the neighborhood’s history and the attractions that keep the story alive. We look forward to seeing you there!
"I looked at the new brochures for the Deanwood and Civil Rights Heritage Trails. I am always astonished and amazed at the work you do and the quality of it. Beautiful."
