Walking Tour: Black Georgetown Re-visited

Walk the incline over the C&O Canal on Wisconsin Avenue to 'Herring Hill' – named by the African American residents who lived in that western part of the city.  Before 1950, there were eight Black churches within this tiny neighborhood adjoining Rock Creek Park! Find out how Theodore Roosevelt Island was utilized for the Civil War. Learn about the architect of the Whitehurst Freeway and prominent citizens, including the sisters who paved the way for Venus and Serena.

 

Tour begins at the Georgetown Harbor, Wisconsin Avenue and K St. NW. (the 31,32,36, or 38 Metro bus) Meet at the southwest corner of Wisconsin Ave. and K St. NW near Georgetown Harbor.  Tour ends at Mt. Zion Cemetery (the G-W Metro bus) on Q St. NW.
