This hour-long living history presentation invites audiences of all ages to turn back the clock and join shopkeeper Anna Shulman on the H Street, NE, of the Great Depression. The performance will take place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street, NE, one block from the location of Anna’s dry goods store.
Set at 1237 H Street, NE, during the Great Depression, the show welcomes audiences to follow the entertaining and true life story of Anna Shulman, a Russian Jewish immigrant shopkeeper. Actress Susan Holliday’s acclaimed performance of Shulman’s life conveys a universal story to which audience members of many ethnic, religious, and cultural groups can relate. The show also provides a glimpse into the history of the Near Northeast neighborhood, today’s Atlas District, when it was one of Washington’s most important shopping districts. Following the performance, audience members and the actress will discuss the show’s many lessons for personal, community, and city history.
