The Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design’s Visiting Artist program brings artists, scholars, and critics to the Corcoran to interact with students and other members of the Corcoran community. Each one-day visit includes intensive in-class interactions focusing on critical discussion and the exchange of ideas, as well as a public lecture that highlights the visiting artist’s work and the role the artist plays in contemporary society. The Corcoran is proud to include several artists represented in 30 Americans in this year’s Visiting Artist program.

Although at first glance, her iconic black cut-paper silhouettes look like benign 19th-century antebellum scenes, Kara Walker’s work often addresses such highly charged themes as power, repression, history, race, and sexuality. On this evening, the 30 Americans artist discusses her career, signature works, and influences.
