On Saturday, September 17th from 10 am to 6 pm, Hillwood will host the 10th annual Gay Day, celebrating a decade of enriching engagement with the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered community in Washington, D.C.
Once again, Hillwood will partner with Rainbow Families DC to present the GLBT Family Garden Party from 10 to 12. Breakfast treats will be served on the Lunar Lawn, where Post hosted her legendary garden parties, while a hands-on art activity, books and games, and fancy dress-ups will have families feeling just like guests of Mrs. Post.
Throughout the day, guests will be treated to Hillwood experiences offered exclusively to our Gay Day visitors. A special 10-stop printed guide will highlight the elements of entertaining and celebrating that were part of Post’s life at Hillwood. A slideshow commemorating 10 years of collaboration between Hillwood and its partners in the GLBT community will be on display in the Visitor Center theater in between showings of the orientation film. A community bulletin board will invite guests to share what ten years of working together has meant to them. And, for a special glimpse into Post’s life at Hillwood, rooms in the Mansion not typically available for viewing by the public will be opened up once again exclusively for Gay Day, with a new look this year into Mrs. Post’s game closet.
The festivities will get turned up later in the day with Punch by the Porte Cochere, a time to socialize and celebrate with performances by DC Lambda Squares, Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, and DC Different Drummers, while enjoying champagne punch and light fare.
In between performances, activities, tours, and socializing, visitors can take in Wedding Belles: Bridal Fashions from the Marjorie Merriweather Post Family, 1874-1958, the special exhibition The Washington Post called “a stroll into extraordinary opulence and impeccable taste,” enjoy a relaxing lunch at the Café, or take a leisurely stroll through the vibrant fall gardens.
The GLBT Family Garden Party is from 10 am to noon.
General activities are from noon to 6 pm.
PRICE: $15, $12 for seniors, $10 Hillwood members and college students, no program fee for children under 18.
