Billy Colbert has exhibited all over the country. His most notable solo exhibitions have been museum shows at the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, Delaware. Colbert’s work is in many private as well as public collections. Colbert’s public collectors include the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas, The National Academy of Science in Washington DC, The Washington Convention Center, Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Colbert’s private collectors include the likes of former Los Angeles prosecutor, Christopher Darden, and former NBA player, coach and noted African American Art Collector, Darrel Walker.
Colbert has been involved in past solo exhibitions at K Space Contemporary in Corpus Christie, Texas, Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and Space B Gallery in New York, New York. Additionally, Colbert’s work has been featured through solo exhibitions at Pyramid-Atlantic in Silver Spring, Maryland, Red Door Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, and Cubicle 10 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Colbert received his Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design from Frostburg State University in 1993 and his MFA in Painting from the University of Delaware in 2000, where he was a Presidential Fellow. The same year, Colbert was awarded Best of Show in the Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Competition at the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas.
Black Life Magazine describes Colbert’s works as “beautiful artistic creations about controversial issues.” With an original yet refined approach, Colbert is able to explore matters of society and culture through art. Critics have labeled his work “whimsical, edgy, loaded, as well as wonderful,” deeming it “enjoyable on many levels.”
