Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens. A summer escape to 18th-century France awaits at Hillwood’s French Festival, on July 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and July 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. Country dances, pantomime, and music bring the life of the French court to the lush gardens at Hillwood. Games, hands-on art activities, and mansion and garden talks offer something delightfully French for the whole family.

New York Baroque Dance Company and Concert Royal revive the music and dance of 18th-century country and court life, including a French contredance and lessons in courtly manners for guests of all ages to join in. The Game of Graces and other pastimes enjoyed by French children will prove a hearty challenge for visitors on the Ellipse Lawn, while others apply their beauty patches—also known as mouches— or enter the workshop to decorate their own miniature piece of French furniture.

Inside the Mansion, chief curator Liana Paredes will enlighten guests about the splendidly decorated commodes (chest of drawers) and massive rock crystal chandelier in the Entry Hall. Outside, join a stroll of the French Parterre, exploring the elements that make it both an exquisite work of art and an exceptional space to entertain.$18, $12 for Hillwood and Alliance Française members, $7 for students, $5 for children ages 6-18. No program fee is charged for children under 6.
