On July 17, 2007, staff, members, friends and supporters of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society paused to celebrate the organization's 45th anniversary. Now more than 45 years after its founding, the Society continues to develop new and creative ways to bring the fascinating story of the Capitol to the public’s attention.

The United States Capitol Historical Society, founded in 1962, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization chartered to enhance and perpetuate the history and heritage of the Capitol, its institutions, and the individuals who have served in Congress and the Capitol. As a public education resource for the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Congress, the Society has worked to make your visiting experience more rewarding.

To this end, the Society has created educational publications and programs that help you understand how the history of the building and its occupants illustrate and symbolize our American history and our unique form of representative government. The Society's website, www.uschs.org, extends its reach nationally, bringing the People's Capitol to the People.

Society activities include:

Educational programs for elementary and secondary schools, including the popular publications Where Freedom Speaks and Outstanding Members of Congress

Enhancement of the Capitol's collection of art and artifacts

Creation of unique Capitol-related memorabilia

Support for research on the art and architectural history of the Capitol and the public careers of those who have served in the Capitol

Exterior walking tours of the United States Capitol occurring from March to November every Monday at 10 am. Tour groups meet at the Union Station metro, Massachusetts Avenue exit, at the top of the escalators. The cost of the tour is $10 per person. Please call 202-543-8919 for details.
