The Phillips house at 21st and Q Streets, NW, c. 1900.The Phillips Collection, America’s first museum of modern art, offers a rare opportunity for an intimate encounter with one of the finest collections of impressionist and modern American and European art, with works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Claude Monet, Honoré Daumier, Georgia O’Keeffe, Arthur Dove, Mark Rothko, Milton Avery, Jacob Lawrence, and Richard Diebenkorn.

Founded by Duncan Phillips and opened to the public in 1921, the museum is housed in Phillips’s 1897 Georgian Revival home and similarly scaled additions that retain the intimacy of a private residence. The Phillips Collection has an active collecting program and regularly organizes acclaimed special exhibitions, many of which travel nationally and internationally. The recently established Center for the Study of Modern Art is an innovative, multidisciplinary programmatic initiative that explores new ways of thinking about art and the nature of creativity.

Introductory, walk-in tours of The Phillips Collection are offered Saturdays at noon and are included in museum admission. Introductions to special exhibitions, also included in museum admission, are held on Sundays at noon. There are also spotlight tours - 15 minutes on one art work - occurring Tuesday - Friday at noon.

The museum stays open until 8:30 on Thursdays for the Artful Evenings series. Along with occasional film screenings, music performances, and other special events, Artful Evening gallery talks are given at :00 pm and 7:00 pm each week, and are included in museum admission.
