In 1807 a burial ground for citizens in the east end of the new federal city was founded. In the first five years, 13 members of Congress, two vice presidents, and numerous military and government officials were interred there. Today over 55,000 people are buried in Congressional Cemetery, and their stories are part of our American History. Find out about the notorious (J. Edgar Hoover), heroic (Alexander Macomb), beloved (John Philip Sousa) and infamous (John Wilkes Booth co-conspirator David Herold) Washingtonians buried in this beautiful historic cemetery.

Located four blocks East of the Potomac Avenue Metro station, Historic Congressional Cemetery is open every day dawn to dusk. The Gatehouse is open 9-5 Monday-Friday. Self-guided walking tours are always available. Free, docent-led tours are held every Saturday at 11am, April through October. In addition, a free, docent-led Civil War History tour is held at 1pm the third Saturday of every month. Other tours and events are scheduled throughout the year.
