White House Historical Association

The White House Historical Association is a private, non-profit educational organization focused on enhancing the public's appreciate for the White House. Founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the Association commissions the annual White House Christmas Tree Ornament, publishes books and produces programs. The proceeds of all of these activities helps the Association preserve the artifacts and history of the White House. On April 4, enjoy a program with the authors of The Stephen Decatur House: A History, a book published by the Association. Purchase your tickets today for an evening that explores the history, architecture, genealogy, and includes a tour of the renovated slave quarters in the Decatur House.

 

Votes for Women Day

This Saturday, March 16, the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center and its partners host a day filled with activities honoring Women's History Month. The event also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which officially gave women the right to vote. Guests will hear stories of Americans who used their voices to inspire change, make a mini-banner, enjoy a scavenger hunt and more. Admission is free. The event is from 10 am to 3 pm.

Dear America: Exhibit by Lubna Zahid

Visit the Gandhi Memorial Center to see the work of Lubna Zahid, a classically trained artist who works in mixed media. Influenced by contemporary and classical calligraphy in Urdu, Arabic and Persian, her pieces include texts in these languages. She experiments with bold renditions of Islamic decorative forms such as the Shamsa. The exhibit opens with a reception this Saturday, March 16, at 2:00 pm. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

St. Patricks Day Festival with Solas Nua & Michael Brunnock 

In this special St. Patrick's Day solo show at the Mansion on O & O Street Museum, singer Michael Brunnock shares music from Ireland, including family songs and stories. David Byrne cast him to sing the role of an Irish musician whose voice guides Sean Penn in the filmThis Must Be the Place. Michael has won an Italian Oscar (Di Donatello) for the best original song If It Falls and has written and performed music for Italian movies Noi 4 and ManuelHe is now finishing a song cycle based on poetry. Tickets for the concert are $25; the show begins at 6 pm.
