DC Youth Poetry Slam

Sun, Jan. 26 - 4pm
National Portrait Gallery
8th and F Streets, NW Washington, DC 20001

If you’ve never been to a poetry slam, they are FUN and worth checking out…we can vouch from experience having attended another semifinals event at Pepco’s Edison Place Gallery in the fall as part of Cultural Tourism DC’s Art4All DC program. This Sunday, head over to the Portrait Gallery to watch the top high school poets from the DC area compete for a chance to earn a spot onthe 2014 team. These teenage performance poets will present powerful original poetry and are judged by members of the audience (ie. you can be a judge! So fun!). The final DC Youth Poetry Slam team will represent the district in regional and international competitions. Presented in collaboration with Split This Rock.

Special Screening of “Fly By Light”

When: Fri, Jan. 17, 2014 - 6:30pm
Where: THEARC Theater, 1901 Mississippi Ave., SE, Washington DC 20020

A group of teenagers board a bus for West Virginia, leaving the streets of Washington, DC to participate in an ambitious peace education program. For the first time in their lives Mark, Asha, Martha, and Corey play in mountain streams, sing under the stars, and confront the entrenched abuse, violence and neglect cycles of their past. But as they return to DC, each young person faces an unforgiving series of hurdles and roadblocks that challenge their efforts to build a better life. Through breathtaking visuals from street corners to mountaintops, Fly By Light is an intimate exploration of the chaotic, confusing, and emotional journey to rewrite a young person’s future.
