Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land
in America

The Franciscan Monastery is the U.S. home of the Holy Land Franciscans, who have cared for the people and sacred shrines of the Holy Land for 800 years. In Washington, the friars raise awareness of and funds for the ministry in the Holy Land, encourage vocations, welcome pilgrims to the monastery, gardens and replicas of Holy Land shrines. Schedule a guided tour to see the Monastery, Catacombs, gardens and Lower Church, which houses a replica of the Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem.

This Sunday, December 3, you can usher in the holiday season at the Monastery during its Christmas Open House. More than 150 Nativities from countries all over the world are on display through January 7, 2018.

Words As Muse

Artist Maureen Squires came across Annie Dillard's book A Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and Dillard's observations of nature, spirituality and writing resonated with Squires. The work in Squires' new series of calligraphy paintings, Words As Muse, celebrates the concepts and wordplay of Annie Dillard. As a calligrapher with a painter's background, Squires blends the art of painting pictures with that of writing letters. Attend the exhibit's opening reception at Touchstone Gallery this Friday, December 1, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

An Odyssey: Brian Dailey's
Digital Work

Local artist Brian Dailey is known for his immersive digital work. He lit up Times Square in February 2013 with his installation Jikai, featuring a moth fluttering around a lightbulb. See Dailey's Odyssey as Atlas Obscura and Dupont Underground present the opening of this new exhibit during a reception this Friday, December 1. Guests may participate with a question-and-answer session and enjoy a performance by frontman Terence Nicholson and bassist Ezra Greer. The exhibit is in Dupont Underground through January 15, 2018.
