Ted Leonsis is the founder, majority owner, chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the sports and entertainment group that owns the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics. He is a former executive with AOL, and currently resides in Potomac, Md. The Washington Business Journal named him Businessperson of the Year in 2001 and the Washingtonian Magazine named him both the Washingtonian of the Year and one of Washington’s Tech Titans.
Cultural Tourism DC asked some notable Washingtonians to share with us their favorite places or events that are special and unique to DC.
Here are Ted Leonsis' top five:
1. Dumbarton Oaks - It’s simply an inspiring location that has something for everyone, from lectures to entertaining music to a fascinating library. I also enjoy the picturesque gardens and the engaging museum galleries – so much to enjoy in one location. And it’s free to the public!
2. Library of Congress - The largest library in the world, rich with history and a must see. Every time I visit I discover something new. Everyone should read the Declaration of Independence, noting its numerous edits along the way to a finished document.
3. Dahlgren Chapel - One of seven chapels on the Georgetown University campus, and I find it to be the perfect spot for peace and reflection.
4. Verizon Center - I love the energy and passion area sports fans bring to Verizon Center as well as the variety of concerts and family shows that visit.
5. C & O Canal - It’s fascinating to visit the canal and envision it as a 180-plus-mile water highway for commerce in the 1800s. It’s truly one of the many historic treasures in our backyard.
This tour delivers the goods. Being raised just outside of washington d.c. (Bethesda), I've gone on innumerable DC sightseeing tours in my lifetime. Every time a family friend or relative visited from out of town meant another trip down to the Mall, another sightseeing tour. Monument tours, ghost tours, "Duck" tours, you name it I've done it. But out of all the DC tours I've been on this was one of the best. I went last weekend with my nieces and nephews on the Capitol Hill tour, which lasted a little over two hours. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the historic sites and presented the information in a fun and lively manner. His enthusiam for the subject was infectious. He had my nieces and nephews in rapt atttention from start to finish. Highly recommend.
