If you’ve ever walked on U St. and thought to yourself, “U St. really is one of the great places in America,” turns out you are exactly right! The American Planning Association released its 2011 “Great Places in America” list and report that U Street:
“has gone through difficult times, particularly the lingering aftermath of devastating riots following the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today the street is pulsing again with the music, businesses and life that, in the early 1900s, distinguished it as the main street of Washington's "city within a city."
Other “Great Places in America” include the Pullman Neighborhood in Chicago, IL, Maymont in Richmond, Virginia, and King Street in Alexandria, Virginia. For a full list of the “Great Places,” visit http://www.planning.org/greatplaces/.
