"WASHINGTON — A new neighborhood heritage trail will soon open in Washington's Columbia Heights neighborhood — once an elite suburb overlooking the city.

The group Cultural Tourism D.C. plans to open the Columbia Heights Heritage Trail on Oct. 24. It will be the 10th in a series of D.C. heritage trails.

Organizers say visitors on the self-guided walking tour will learn how Columbia Heights has hosted every group of people that has influenced city life in Washington. Sites include the place where Marriott International Inc. got its start, where influential punk bands first performed and streets that inspired world-renowned writers.

The neighborhood was a shopping and entertainment destination until the race riots of 1968. Now it's attracting major development again.
