Overview Overview

Founded in 1996 and incorporated in 1999, Cultural Tourism DC and its members affirm the importance of culture and heritage to local neighborhoods and the city’s economic prosperity by developing, delivering, and celebrating real experiences for area residents and visitors. 

Cultural Tourism DC envisions Washington, DC as a city of rich and diverse culture and heritage that generates civic pride and economic prosperity in neighborhoods across the entire city.

OBJECTIVES:

Cultural Tourism DC's objectives are to: 

  • Increase awareness of local cultural institutions among visitors and residents
  • Promote pride and appreciation for Washington's culture and heritage 
  • Serve as a resource for neighborhoods seeking to develop their cultural tourism potential 
  • Create more tax revenue, jobs, and business opportunities for the city

PROGRAMS:

Cultural Tourism DC's programs reflect the broad spectrum of its mission:

  • Neighborhood Heritage Trails, which use photography and history on poster-sized street signs to tell neighborhood stories. 
  • Passport DC, a two-week celebration of DC’s international culture, featuring open houses and cultural programming at Washington’s embassies and international centers.
  • WalkingTown, DC Spring and Fall Editions, a weekend of free walking tours in neighborhoods across the city.
  • African American Heritage Trail, Washington, DC, a free guide and online database of significant African American sites in the nation's capital.
  • Annual citywide promotions offered in partnership with the Destination DC, such as the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration, which will take place January through April 2009, honoring the 16th president’s 200th birthday.
  • Art on Call, a citywide initiative to restore abandoned fire and police call boxes as community art.
  • Tourism-driven community development projects in neighborhoods such U Street and Anacostia.  
  • Publication of maps, brochures, and a major cultural tourism website.
