Nine miles of roads take visitors through the arboretum's 446 spectacular acres. Standing majestically on a grassy knoll at the heart of the arboretum are 22 34-foot-tall sandstone Corinthian columns that once graced the east portico of the Capitol.
In this sylvan setting, you'll find a variety of exhibits from azaleas and formal landscaped gardens to the Gotelli Dwarf and Slow Growing Conifer Collection and North America's first and most comprehensive bonsai museum. In addition, the arboretum highlights horticultural specimens, seasonal displays, aquatic plants, and a two-acre herb garden.
Established by Congress in 1927, The U.S. National Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta in the country, serves the nation by breeding plants for different localities, conducting research, providing education, and undertaking long-term projects.
Located on these grounds is the United Brick Corporation Brick Complex, a National Registry site, built in 1927. The brickyard complex is not open to the public, but may be viewed from the New York Avenue parking area.
