The current database has information on more than 200 important African American history sites throughout Washington, DC. We invite you to begin your exploration of Washington's African American history here.

The database was developed as part of the African American Heritage Trail project. It expands on the information printed in the African American Heritage Trail booklet currently available for free at selected locations around Washington.

This database is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive. History is a living enterprise, and the person who we determine today was the first to scale a mountain may indeed, upon further research, prove to have been the second one to do so. The database is updated regularly.
