Sculptor Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial, created this memorial to Rear Admiral Francis Dupont, who became the first naval hero for the Union cause in the Civil War.

This memorial, erected in 1921, was placed on the National Register in 1978 and on the DC Register in 1979.
