Historic Barracks Row's 6th Annual Oktoberfest |
Saturday, September 27, 2008
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill Oktoberfest is a community festival organized by Barracks Row Main Street that celebrates the street’s renaissance. Designed in 1801 as the first commercial corridor of the federal city, 8th Street was substantially revitalized over the past ten years.
Come celebrate Oktoberfest on Barracks Row!
Activities include:
- Hourly, docent-led tours of the home of the commandants and the Marine Corps barracks
- Opening of the local football season the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders
- Expanded beer gardens hosted by local restaurants, brass bands, coloring contests and a petting zoo for kids, and German cars to admire – including a Cold War Trabant!
- Booths of all description featuring crafts, spring bulbs, pretzels, and strudel
- The Military Culinary Competition, which pits Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard against each other for bragging rights as to who has the top chef - and maybe, by extension, the best chow
- And last but not least, a beer garden! Anyone who would like to drink must show his or her ID at the check point and receive a bracelet as proof of age. Anyone with a bracelet can then buy tickets for beer.
Admission: Free
Location: 8th Street, SE just below Pennsylvania Avenue
Metro: Eastern Market (Blue and Orange lines)
A fleet of green-in-every-way E Cruzers (stretch golf carts) will give Capitol Hill residents free rides to the fair.
