Welcome to Warm Up to a Museum! This Cultural Tourism DC program features 25 gallery talks, film, tours, and more designed to warm body and soul at more than 19 organizations located across DC. We invite you to explore all the city's museums have to offer during this quiet, wintry time of year.

Feel a closer connection to your family history using the genealogical resources available at the Sumner School Museum and Archives. The archives hold a wealth of historical material on DC Public Schools, including records of students and staff. Archivist Hayden Wetzel will assist you in exploring and interpreting these resources.

Why not kiss a frog this Valentine’s Day? Hop on over to the National Geographic Museum for Frogs! A Chorus of Colors and cozy up to live frogs from around the world. An exhibition of photographs, Face to Face with Frogs by Mark W. Moffett, accompanies the live exhibit.

Experience the heat of New Orleans at Mardi Gras Family Day. Bring the family out for a day of storytelling, music making, costuming, and mask and musical-instrument creating during this fabulously festive program!

Opening the Time Shadows poetry project, this tour features well-known historic poetry from Germany, China, and the United States. Over the years, German and Chinese immigrants and Americans have all influenced the character of downtown Washington. Stimulate your imagination as we walk past historic sites and hear poems read aloud. The tour will end at the Chinatown Community Cultural Center (616 H Street, NW) where you can fire up your taste buds with rich German hot chocolate and spicy Chinese snacks.

Created in forges heated to 2,400 degrees, some of the world’s most beautiful wrought iron artwork is located in the National Cathedral. Gates, grilles, crosses, vases, candlesticks, and handrails are all a part of exploring the magic of wrought iron. Come to this “close up” tour of the artistry that adds spice to a building. Feverish Family Fun: Awesome African American Women Artists!

Celebrate Black History Month at NMWA! Explore the collection to learn about the lives and work of African American artists, including painters Alma Thomas and Lois Mailou Jones and mixed-media artist Amalia Amaki. Then create your own artwork based on the style of the featured artists. Ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult.

The rich vocals of soprano Mari-Yan Pringle will transport you out of your winter doldrums and put a song in your heart. Cozy up to a loved one in the museum’s wood-paneled Music Room, where modern masterpieces add visual pleasure to musical delights. After all, when was the last time you surprised that special someone with a spontaneous Sunday afternoon of art and music?

In recognition of Black History Month, the National Museum of Health and Medicine will present a screening of Glory, an Academy Award-winning motion picture based on the true story of the Union’s 54th Regiment. Museum staff will provide an introduction to the film as well as a special exhibit of specimens from the museum’s collection belonging to members of the 54th. Free hot popcorn.

Workshop: Art from the Heart

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Decorate your own heart-shaped box, inspired by the French gold boxes displayed in the Mansion. Use stickers, ribbons, “gems”, and other materials to make your “heart of gold” sparkle! Enjoy a cup of steaming hot chocolate in our rustic Adirondack building while you create a work of art from the heart. Tours of the Mansion, café dining, and shopping are also part of this special Sunday opening.

Between the art fair and the auction block, the market for modern and contemporary art is on fire, and museums are a major player in this trend. Enjoy a rare glimpse into museum collecting practices with The Phillips Collection’s Director Jay Gates. He will discuss how important gifts and recent acquisitions have enriched the strength and vitality of the museum, highlighting works by artists such as Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, and Elizabeth Murray.

Come in from the cold on opening night of the exhibition The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving Image, Part I: Dreams, and transport yourself into a dream world through film. Cozy up in the Ring Auditorium where internationally renowned video artist Tony Oursler will discuss his animations of non-living objects with the use of projectors. His work explores the permeability of media - what flows through it and how it flows through us.

Role Model Workshop - Hot Careers: llustration and Graphic Design

Children’s book author, illustrator, graphic designer, and fine artist Adjoa J. Burrowes has created art for more than 15 books as well as packaging and consumer products for the Campbell Soup Company, Mattel Toys, and Disney. Burrowes will introduce participants to illustration and graphic design through her insights and art. Teens will learn how to make their own decorative papers by experimenting with the same techniques Burrowes implements in her artwork. Open to middle/junior high and high school students and college undergraduates.

How much heat can one man take? Writer-director Preston Sturges’s first film tells the rise and fall of Dan McGinty, which begins when he endears himself to the political machine by voting 37 times in a single election and ends with him working as a bartender in a banana republic. Presented in conjunction with the exhibit Running for Office: Candidates, Campaigns, and the Cartoons of Clifford Berryman.

Members of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) celebrated Valentine’s Day in 1914 by making cards for members of Congress. Each card carried a special message, encouraging the Congressmen to take action on the hot topic of the day - woman’s suffrage. Join us in this tradition by making a personalized Valentine to your Congressmember about a hot topic close to your heart! Supplies (and examples) will be provided, but bring your own photos, etc., for a more personal touch.

Art Enables celebrates its sixth birthday with "Six Degrees of Separation," a show of sizzling new works by its 27 program artists. Coral reefs - sometimes called the rainforests of the oceans - are dying around the world, and their disappearance threatens not only the incredibly diverse ecosystem that depends on them, but also human health and welfare. The Koshland Science Museum will host a panel discussion with experts Kiho Kim, Tundi Agardi, Ove Hoegh-Guldburg, and Chad Cohen to discuss the problem and its potential solutions.

Join Dr. Waleed Abdalati of NASA for a lecture on rapid changes in the polar regions of the Earth. From disappearing Arctic sea ice to the disintegration of 10,000 year-old Antarctic ice shelves, the Earth’s cover is changing in remarkable ways. A presentation of satellite images of Earth gives new insights into how and why ice is changing and what these changes may mean for life on Earth. Hot cocoa and other refreshments provided.
