Sarah Newman is the curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Her recent exhibition, 30 Americans, is exhibit now at the Corcoran until February 12. She is currently working on a major show of modern and contemporary British art.

Cultural Tourism DC asked some notable Washingtonians to share with us their favorite places or events that are special and unique to DC.

Here are Sarah's top five:

  1. H Street Corridor, Northeast - This neighborhood has great new galleries, restaurants, and bars opening up all the time.
  2. Dupont Circle Farmers’ Market - I go there every Sunday for great local peaches, tomatoes, and in the fall, lots of apples. I’m a huge fan of the crab cakes as well.
  3. Florida Avenue Grill - My favorite place for soul food in the city. I especially love going there for breakfast, and sitting in one of the tiny booths, getting eggs, sausage, and grits with lots of butter.
  4. Canoeing on the Potomac River - You can rent boats in Georgetown, and feel like you’ve left the city within minutes.
  5. Girl with the Red Hat by Jan Vermeer at the National Gallery of Art - This gemlike painting is like a window into another world and another consciousness—it is exquisitely intimate and serene. Whenever I come back and see it I am always shocked by how vivid it is.

Testimonials

This tour delivers the goods.  Being raised just outside of washington d.c. (Bethesda), I've gone on innumerable DC sightseeing tours in my lifetime.   Every time a family friend or relative visited from out of town meant another trip down to the Mall, another sightseeing tour.  Monument tours, ghost tours, "Duck" tours, you name it I've done it.  But out of all the DC tours I've been on this was one of the best.  I went last weekend with my nieces and nephews on the Capitol Hill tour, which lasted a little over two hours.  The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the historic sites and presented the information in a fun and lively manner.  His enthusiam for the subject was infectious.  He had my nieces and nephews in rapt atttention from start to finish.  Highly recommend.
