Having spent the past year exploring D.C.'s myths and mysteries on WAMU 88.5, Rebecca Sheir is uniquely positioned to know some of the area's best-kept secrets. After a year of reporting for WAMU, Rebecca is the new host and producer of Metro Connection, WAMU's weekly public affairs program about people, places and goings-on in the National Capital Region.

Cultural Tourism DC asked some prominent Washingtonians to share with us their favorite places or events that are special and unique to DC.

Rebecca shares her top 5.

1. Canadian Embassy Rotunda: Call me a sound geek (I won't be offended), but the rotunda at 501 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is music to my ears. Short story long: as you approach the center, the parabolic reflector's sonic properties take over and suddenly you're in a giant echo chamber. Long story short: it's a heck of a lot of fun for kids, grown-ups and everyone in between.

2. National Cathedral Gardens: It's Frances Hodgson Burnett meets Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., meets Darth Vader. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it's especially worth a visit after dark.

3. Brunch at the Mansion on O Street: I'm tempted not to list this one, for fear of ruining one of the city's best-kept brunch secrets... but this place is so splendidly strange -- and so downright delicious -- I just have to share the joy. Be sure to save plenty of time between courses (i.e. trips to the numerous, bounteous buffets) to explore the nooks, crannies and secret doors/walls of these five interconnected townhouses near Dupont Circle.

4. Tidal Basin Paddle Boats: They're not just for tourists anymore. Or shouldn't be, at any rate!

5. Maine Avenue Fish Market: I moved to DC from Alaska, and the wares at "The Wharf" are the closest I've experienced to the Last Frontier's outrageously fresh seafood. Noshing note: if you're looking for a quick nibble before heading home with your goods, grab a free dessert sample or two (or twelve) at Jimmy's Grill.

New book details best biking routes in and around DC

For folks looking to expand their biking horizons around the region, a new biking book on the market this month details more than 90 great rides in the District, MD and NoVA. Its called Where to Bike Washington, DC (www.wheretobikewashingtondc.com). There are even 39 rides chosen to be especially kid safe and kid friendly. It's the best book on biking routes I've ever seen, with spot-on tips, full-color maps and detailed ride logs. Check it out!

Hi Rebecca

Just wanted to congratulate you on the success you have achieved in your profession. Very impressive!!

Richard and Gabe were in Cleveland this past weekend and during the course of conversation I asked if he had heard anything about you and your sibs, just to keep myself up-to-date about what's going on in your lives. I still consider you and them family even under the circumstances. You have worked your way up in a field that is very difficult to progress in so I'm sure you are really good at what you do.

I wish you well and hope you continue to reach for stars.

Aunt Lynn
