Carolyn Hax, advice columnist for the Washington Post, is renowned for her advice on relationships, both promising and . . . pfft! In celebration of Valentine’s Day, she chooses her top five favorite DC spots – all of which make for a great date!

Cultural Tourism DC asked some notable Washingtonians to share with us their favorite places or events that are special and unique to DC.

Here are Carolyn’s top five:

  1. Sculpture Garden skating rink - Our winters are mild but still winter, which makes DC the perfect place for an outdoor skate. To avoid Mall parking hassles, I choose Reston Town Center’s rink.
  2. Rock Creek Nature Center - The trails offer a welcome immersion in nature—the last deer we saw stayed still and watched us—without a huge commitment of time or gear. An hour or two and a pair of sneakers are all you need.
  3. Capitals games - Have a beer, a primal yell and (on most nights) some great hockey with 18,000 people wearing red.
  4. Volta Park in Georgetown - Pool, baseball, tennis, doggies, playground, and if you get hungry, it's a quick (and pretty) hop to the Wisconsin Avenue shops.
  5. The Taft Bridge - It transports, and not just from Kalorama to Woodley.
