Anas “Andy” Shallal is the founder of Busboys and Poets, a restaurant, bookstore, fair trade market, and a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted. Since its inception Busboys and Poets has been a magnate for book talks, community gatherings, panel discussion and networking. Shallal has founded or co-founded several peace and justice organizations and holds leadership positions in numerous others.

Cultural Tourism DC asked some notable Washingtonians to share with us their favorite places or events that are special and unique to DC.

Here are Andy’s five favorite places in DC

  1. Meridian Hill Park (Malcolm X Park) - Love to hang out there and take a walk - great drumming on Sunday afternoons.
  2. Frederick Douglass Home in Historic Anacostia - Gorgeous views of the city and very serene - great rocking chairs on the porch. Take a book and hang out on a Saturday.
  3. The pond at the National Museum of the American Indian – It’s hard to imagine such a place in the middle of downtown. It’s hidden behind heavy foliage, but worth the discovery.
  4. Teaching for Change Bookstore at Busboys and Poets - Every title is well chosen and hand selected to meet the standards of Teaching for Change. Can't go wrong with any of the titles.
  5. ASL Poetry Slam - American Sign Language Poetry for the deaf is quite a phenomenal cultural event. It’s the third Friday of the month at Busboys and Poets 14th and V - Great for deaf or hearing audiences.
