Insider's Guide: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, Ford's Theatre

To celebrate Black History Month and President’s Day, we feature two special DC Insiders this week, President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. They can both be seen in the play Necessary Sacrifices at Ford’s Theatre, which closes February 18. They get the day off for President’s Day on Monday, too, and here are your best bets on places to find them.

Abraham Lincoln’s Favorite DC Activities:

Frederick Douglass’ Favorite DC Activities:

  1. Newseum - Pouring over the day’s headlines
  2. National Gallery of Art - Listening to fellow violinists at the Sunday chamber concerts
  3. Anacostia Community Museum - Strolling through exhibits
  4. Frederick Douglass National Historic Site - Treading the boards of Cedar Hill
  5. National Women’s History Museum - Exploring the women’s suffrage exhibits

David Selby plays Abraham Lincoln in Necessary Sacrifices. His career includes multiple productions for Broadway including The Heiress and The Eccentricities of a Nightingale and several shows Off-Broadway and at the Kennedy Center. His films include Up the Sandbox with Barbara Streisand, Night of Dark Shadows, Dying Young with Campell Scott and Julia Roberts, White Squalland, and The Social Network. An accomplished playwright and novelist, Selby’s most recent book Lincoln’s Better Angel, reflects on the personal impact of war.

Craig Wallace plays Frederick Douglass and previously appeared at Ford’s Theatre in Sabrina Fair and Jitney. His D.C. credits include multiple productions with Arena Stage, Folger Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre, Signature Theatre, Round House Theatre and Woolly Mammoth. He received a Helen Hayes nomination for his role in Signature’s production of Angels in America Part 2.
