She is also a distinguished teacher, speaker, and literary activist, as wel as the co-founder and president emeritus of the Hurston/Wright Foundation. Marita's novel Long Distance Life, which takes place in Columbia Heights, is featured on Cultural Tourism DC's Columbia Heights Heritage Trail.
