Jane Freundel Levey

Jane Freundel Levey oversees the history-related products and programs of CTDC: District of Columbia Neighborhood Heritage Trails, Art on Call, and African American Heritage Trail. The Neighborhood Heritage Trails, a collaboration with the District Department of Transportation, are a system of signs that provide self-guided walking tours of the city’s historic neighborhoods. Art on Call is an initiative in cooperation with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities that transforms the city’s obsolete fire and police call boxes into neighborhood art projects. The African American Heritage Trail, a collaboration with the DC Historic Preservation Office, includes a guidebook, database of more than 200 African American historic sites throughout the city, and signage program. As a public historian, Levey frequently gives talks on Washington, DC history topics.

Prior to joining CTDC, from 1993 until 2000, Levey was the editor of Washington History: Magazine of The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and a consulting historian for corporate clients. Levey is co-author with former Washington Post columnist Bob Levey of Washington Album: A Pictorial History of the Nation's Capital, published in 2000. Her own articles on Washington have appeared in The Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine, among other periodicals. Levey holds an MA in American Civilization from George Washington University and a BA from Wellesley College.
